Pinch Pot a Tutorial for Children

I recieved an enquiry recently asking how to make a pinch pot for a childrens class.
So with the camera in one hand I put together a few images that I hope will be of help.

Make 2 balls of equal size that will fit comfortably in the palm of your hand.
Press thumb into the centre of the ball.
Gently squeeze the sides with equal pressure of the first ball.
Repeat the process to the 2nd ball.
Score with slip.
Join together with a slight twisting action till you feel the edges grip.

Sandstone: A Trip to the Bush

Art & Wildflowers In the Outback - Bus / Camping trip.
Anne and Lloyd Shepherdson ( Sheppes Transport) of Margaret River WA, are keen travelers, campers and supporters of the arts. They had organized a camping trip and so filled their bus with artists, potters and writers.
I was invited to conduct a hand building and Raku workshop. With the generosity of the local council, I was able to utilize the Sandstone Community Hall as a workshop area.
All was ready when the bus arrived.

Trudy Golley Workshop

Trudy Golley repeated her mould making workshop first conducted at the EDGE conference in Perth 1999. This time it was presented by the SODA Studio. Trudy adds paper to the plaster mix which lightens the end product. I does make for easier handling especially when using larger moulds.I used this method when I made the mould for 1.5 metre boat hulls.

She also demonstrated making a clay slip to cover simple wire sculptures.

Sasukenei Kiln during building

In 2007 my kiln building project finally began. In the past I have built several train kilns of various sizes but this next kiln was to be a major project. 3 years ago I bought 10 pallets of fire bricks with fellow potter Ian Dowling at an auction, so I had plenty of building materials. The considerations for the kiln were ease of firing and loading without being to big and most importantly not to create vast amounts of smoke. The design would need to be environmentally friendly as possible, enable me to fire on my own but be versatile to fire longer with help if needed.

Stefan Jakob Raku Kiln Workshop

Stefan Jakob is a frequent visitor to Australia conducting workshops in how to turn an IKEA rubbish bin into a raku kiln. Fleur Schell hosted the workshop on her property in Hamlin Bay in the south of Western Australia. The following images show the progress of the kiln construction which is fired entirely by wood. It was a nonstop weekend and one of the best workshops I have attended.
